Petroleum- paraffinum liqudum, mineral oils, petroleum oils
These are some of the cheap base products in nearly every non-organic cleanser, body lotion or moisturiser. By-products of making petrol; they are used because they are cheap, not because they are good for your skin. Much like wrapping your skin in cling film, these chemicals block pores and interfere with the skin's ability to eliminate toxins. They can slow down skin function and cell development resulting in premature ageing. Oddly, they are used in many non-organic anti-ageing creams.

Polyethylene Glycol (PEG)
This is a potentially carcinogenic petroleum ingredient that can alter and reduce the skin’s natural moisture factor. It can increase the appearance of ageing and leave your skin more vulnerable to bacteria. PEG is used in non-organic cleansers to dissolve oil and grease. It is also used in caustic spray-on oven cleaners. One to avoid.

Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS)
SLS is used in industrial detergents and surfactants that pose serious health risks. Used in car washes, garage floor cleaners and engine degreasers - and in 90% of non-organic products that foam. Go and check your foam face wash, shampoo or children's bubble bath.
